Evaluations

At the initiation of services an initial 50-minute screening is conducted where preliminary observations of a child’s sensory processing, motor coordination, behavior, and response to adult interaction are performed to determine the need for further testing. At that time a formal evaluation may be scheduled to further define problem area and determine areas of therapy focus.

Evaluations with report consist of :

  • A minimum of 3 hours evaluation, including the following services:
  • Direct assessment (2-3 hours)
  • Records review
  • Telephone consultation with other team members to gain information about the child (as requested).
  • Written report (2-2.5 hours)
  • One hour parent conference

A typical Comprehensive Evaluation typically runs 5-6 hours. If additional services are requested the charge may be higher.

Areas assessed may include :

  • Neurodevelopmental status and reflex maturation
  • Sensory processing and sensory defensiveness
  • Motor planning
  • Daily living skills
  • Gross and fine motor development
  • Visual-motor integration
  • Visual perception
  • Feeding/eating
  • Social interaction

A variety of evaluation tools are available for children of various ages and needs. An evaluation identifies the factors contributing to the functional difficulties the child is experiencing, allowing intervention to address the underlying problem(s). Recommendations are made on how to address the deficits and may range from suggestions for at-home strategies and activities to in-clinic professional intervention.

If your child has received an occupational therapy assessment from another facility, please provide me with a copy at the initial screening session. After reviewing the report, I can let you know if that assessment will be sufficient for moving directly into treatment.

When an assessment was done at another facility, the first therapy session will be charged at a higher rate to account for the additional time required for me to review records and reports and to plan your child’s therapy.
